What's Up With The Book (For One, I'm Giving a Copy Away)

People in my off-line life have been asking me, "How are things going with your book?" It's been two months now since The Church Planting Wife released but I still don't quite know how to answer that question. I know that it's out there, my heart having been shipped in Amazon boxes and splayed open in the hands of women who have the same calling as me. If that is you, if you have read the book and not only read it but allowed the Lord to do a little work in your soul, I say thank you. Truly, thank you.
When I held a copy of the book in my hands for the first time, I prayed that God would use my meager offering held inside to embolden women and strengthen marriages and churches through those women. I've been amazed when He's let me in on how He's answering that prayer. I've been humbled that He is using the book as a resource for women entering their church planting adventure--it's like I'm a friend along for a ride of faith and reward! How good is our God.

So I don't really know how things are going with the book in terms of numbers or measurements of success, but do I really need to know? All I need to know is that God is using it how He chooses, and that I'm so grateful to have been given this gift and to walk this road with other church planting and ministry wives.

In honor of the book's two-month birthday, I'm giving away a copy of the book! To enter, simply leave a comment about either why you want to read it or why you want it for a friend. This week is Spring Break in our family so I will announce a winner when I return with a new blog post next Monday, April 8.

If you're one of those people who make a meal out of sampling food at Sam's or Costco, you might want a sample of the book before plunking down your change. I understand. Did you know that I offer a few sample chapters for free here on the blog? Here they are:

Since this is turning into an infomerical, I will first promise that this will be the last post of this kind for a long while and then I will invite you to join me at two upcoming church planting conferences. In April, I'll be at Exponential in Orlando, where I'll speak on handling criticism. The conference is sold out but you can get the Webcast from anywhere in the world.

And in July, I'll be at the Send North America conference in the great state of Texas, where I'll be sharing the microphone with my friend Shauna Pilgreen as we discuss the transition into church planting from the wife's perspective. And I'll also be eating Tex Mex for every meal.

At both of these conferences, I'd love to meet up with any Grace Covers Me readers, get to know each other, and pray for one another. If you're going to either one, leave me a comment and let me know if you'd like to do a meet-up!

Finally, if you subscribe to the blog through Google Reader, please go ahead and switch to another reader now. Google Reader is going kaput in July and I don't want to lose you! I've switched to Blog Lovin', but I hear Feedly is good, too. You can always subscribe by email up there on the top left of the blog where it says--you guessed it--"Subscribe by Email". Or you can follow me on Twitter and only click over whenever I coax you to this space with a clever or intriguing tweet.

Thanks for letting me give you a kind of "State of the Blog" post. I'll be back to my normal blog self next Monday, when I will also announce the giveaway winner, which is supposed to remind you right now to leave a comment for a chance to be that winner. I'm sneaky like that.

Happy Spring Break or Happy Normal Week, depending on where you are.

Hi I am a church planter wife and mom of a 4 yr old in Vancouver BC, I would love to have 15 copies of your book to give to other pastor and planter wives on our annual wives retreat in May 5-7. Me like other wives, find this a new and unpredictable adventure. Currently I am working 3 part time jobs as well as being a mom, wife, and spiritual leader. Most of these women live away from family sometimes oceans away, and church planting in this city is tough because it is so expensive here...and many make it by working full time while raising their families and planting a church, some ministry families live on below poverty line income giving all to serve Christ with their husbands....it is a lot of work and these women are creative and step up to the task and joy through trials that church planting brings. I would love to have a book written by others who are on this adventure, even any type of Christian book would be nice to find....here in Canada.... I really enjoy your blog and would love to know more about your journey. I have enjoyed reading your posts. Thanks for sharing your heart.
thanks,
Amy Laughlin

I am the wife of a bi-vocational church planter in Richmond, VA. We have 2 small children on the journey with us. Currently, we are re-planting a struggling church. I would love a copy of your book both for encouragement and to be challenged. Sometimes, I just want my husband to have 1 job, not 3, to attend a church that has nursery care, so I can actually be in the service, and to have a more "normal" life. Then I remember that this is the calling God has placed on our lives for this season, and I cry out for more of His grace. I'd crave the opportunity to peek in at your journey!

Oh, I want a hard copy to keep forever! I have a downloaded copy on my computer and still reference it a bunch. I want one I can take and show others and highlight and mark all up!

I am a church planting wife in Italy. Eight of our thirteen years of marriage have spent living overseas with our 3 children. I read your book, and was so blessed through your honesty, words of encouragement and wise council. Wish it was a resource available to me on the start of our church planting journey. I would love to gift the book to our soon to be colleague's wife to read before their arrival on the field. Thank you for the book and your blog!

I've thought about church planting and know my wife would love to check it out. There's obviously tons of material out there for the husband, but this is the first thing I've heard of for wives.

I am a church planting worship leader's wife in PA. I'm reading your book and have been so encouraged and challenged by it so far. I also wish I had read it before starting this journey of church planting! I've bought a copy for my pastor's wife, who introduced me to your blog, and I'd love a copy for a good friend of ours who's husband will begin pastoring a church in Spain next month. I know she would benefit from your story and the testimony of what God has done in your heart!

I am a church planters wife in MN. It is our second church plant. After the first church plant my husband & I said, "We are never doing that again." Guess what? We are! After many years of God softening our hearts, humbling us, growing us, and teaching us we are back at it and so thankful to be a part of what God is doing in our community. I wish I would have had your book back in the early 90's when we planted the first time. I downloaded a copy of your book and much of what you speak about in your book I can relate to 100%! My husband often meets with other church planters within our denomination and listens & encourages them. I want to give your book to the wives of these church planters to encourage them and help them see that they are not alone!

My husband and I are planting a church in Mt. Airy, MD starting this coming fall. I would love to be able to read your book and glean wisdom from your experiences. From reading your blog, I know it would be a benefit :)

Yay! I missed previous give-always. I'm not sure why I never thought to see if you had a facebook page for the book before it was released, so I just found your fb page a month or so ago.

I learned about your book about 2 weeks or so before it was released. I was looking for a different book for church planting wives on amazon, found yours (saw it had yet to be released), read an excerpt and was blown away. I couldn't believe how you had taken the words straight from my own heart and my own mind and put them into a book. My husband and I are about two years into planting a church here in Southwest Ohio and it has been a labor of love... and not just an easy labor... but like - contractions for weeks - dilating slowly - only to find you'll need a c-section - labor. Though the journey is rough (scary, intense, at times divisive, insane, need I go on?) it has also been overflowing with joy, excitement, SALVATION, and miracles. To be able to witness God work through the lives and hearts of people we've encountered has been worth every single tear, every single anxious moment, every single uncertainty.

ANYWAY, I haven't read your book fully, because I haven't bought it (you know the budget of a bivocational church planter isn't one that is very expandable!) My husband wants for me to have this book though, so I'm sure I will have it soon even if I'm not chosen for the give-away. I do thank you though for putting into spoken words what I have felt in my heart and thought in my mind. I know that there are so many of us who feel these very same things. Just knowing someone else felt them and can relate can speak volumes to our hearts, drawing us ever nearer to His. Thank you not just for your own ministry through this book but for also being obedient to serve our God and your husband through church planting. I've no doubt your book is working in the lives and ministries of many and building the kingdom. Blessings!

My husband and I planted a church in Indiana. I love your blog and have been so encouraged in this difficult journey. I would love to read your book to be challenged and encouraged as well. I would also love it as a resource to help other church-planting/pastor's wives, as I have a real burden to encourage those in that specific ministry.

I stand amazed said...

I would love a copy of your book! My husband and I are beginning a new work in a city we said we would never ever live in...again...back to our hometown. We knew it was from God when he called us there! We are in beginning stages and are set to launch in July!

I bought the kindle version of your book

Christine said...

I am a pastor's wife and bought the kindle version of your book a few weeks ago. It was just what I need in this season- lifting off burdens that I had in realizing that the responsibility of the wellbeing for the church is not mine in the same way as it belongs to m husband and the elders, and dealing with anxieties through driving into my heart that my job is faithfulness and trusting God with whatever he chooses to grow.

I look giving away books and solid resources to people I know who would benefit from them (downside of electronic versions!) and already have someone I said I'd give the one lend that kindle allows...but I really really would love a copy to send to one of the missionary/church planter's wives that I know overseas. A few months ago we had some time with their family and much of the sources of struggle in their marriage and overseas were addressed in your book- especially the first few chapters about calling. They don't have too much access to resources out there so I'd love to send them a copy!!

Christine said...

Wonderful idea! And so glad to hear the book was beneficial for you as a pastor's wife.

Christine said...

Thank you!

Christine said...

To be honest, I've sometimes wondered if I'm the only one who has felt the things I've felt and write about, so it's always so encouraging when other church planting wives say they've thought and experienced the same things. So I'm not crazy after all! And I just really want the book to speak honestly about what cp wives are going through. So thank you for such kind words. That means a lot to me.

Christine said...

In the beginning of our plant, we said the same thing: "We're never doing THAT again." But now we're more open because we know God is faithful. Blessings, blessings, blessings to you and your husband for planting a second church AND for encouraging other church planters and their wives.

Christine said...

My mom bought me this book and I'm working through it slowly to absorb as much as I can. I would love a copy to give to a dear friend of mine who is praying with her husband about the possibility of a church plant.

Christine said...

I am a young pastor's wife, and while I've just started the book, your story is encouraging. I told my hubby right away when we were dating that I had no intention of being married to a pastor, but after a lot of thought, I realized that if he was the first guy I acutally liked enough to date in the last 3 years, that maybe I needed to be more open to the calling of pastor's wife. Our first church has been pretty sticky, and we've recently found ourselves in a transition and healing period between pastors. Your blog as a whole has been a huge encouragement to both my husband and I as we continue to set and hold our family values and work to keep our family and each other as our primary ministries. This is one of the first places that we found that told us we're not crazy, THANK YOU!

Christine said...

I also fall in the category of not planning my life around becoming a full time minister's wife - but here it is laid in front of me. With God as my helper I can be a better helper to my husband. We are planting in inner-city Dayton, Ohio. I was thankful to have a mentor from our sending church but I can remember a time when my mentor said, sometimes you'll just have to pick up a book to have someone who can relate to what you are going through. So I need the practical, spiritual guidance, of someone who can empathize with my weakness when it comes to being a pastor's wife.

Christine said...

I haven't read the book but after reading the excerpt I plan on getting it soon. I could learn a lot about our family's ministry and life from you! :)

Christine said...

I would really like to read it because I'm engaged to a man who is headed into full-time pastoral ministry (Lord willing!) and church planting may be in our future. I want to continue to prepare to be a supportive and encouraging wife to him!

Christine said...

I have already purchased a copy for myself and a friend, but keep meeting more church-planting wives and would love to give another one away!

Hi Christine, I live in the UK and would really like a copy of this book to give to my friend Adrienne. She is an american missionary alongside her husband - they followed God's calling upon them to come over to London and church plant. In August her husband will become pastor of a church (that was effectively dying out) and they are stepping out in faith into a new location, with the long term vision that church plants will grow out of this calling. I am convinced that Adrienne who is a church planters wife will be greatly encouraged from reading your book (I've already recommended it to her) :)

Christine said...

Hi Christine! I would love to give this book to my pastor's wife - I have been attending this church plant for 3 and a half years, and I think she would be incredibly encouraged and blessed by it!

Christine said...

Wow! Thanks for the chance to win a copy of your book! I would love a copy to give to my friend, Allysa. Allysa and her husband Andy have recently been called to plant a church in our hometown and the church would be an off branch of an already existing church a few towns over. I know this book would encourage her in her new role as pastor's wife but also free her from some of the pre-conceived expectations that are bound to be placed on her. Thanks again!

Christine said...

I love how many of you are wanting to give this as a gift of encouragement to a friend!!

Christine said...

Hi Christine!
wow- i've just found you, and God has used you- my heart feels so much better already! my husband and I have just started a Church Plant in a coastal town in Australia. and from the little i've read on your blog and the description of your book- i would love to read it! to learn from you, and to get help and hope in my heart. (sidenote- even if you dont choose me, i'll buy it anyways :) )

Christine said...

I would really like to read (& win) your book because I have found your blog such an encouragement and think the book would be such a valuable resource and so helpful in my growth. I am a twenty-something wife & mama - married to a youth pastor, we have been at this church for almost three years, he is entering his "in ministry" masters program this summer, we have a young and growing family and he is beginning to feel like church planting could be part of his/our calling. It is something we are praying about, and open to, but I think this book would just be a real encouragement to me both in my current "role" and if I am to become a church planters wife. Thanks for the chance to win!

Thank you for the free chapter downloads that had me crying and laughing as I sit in my local coffee shop by myself without my 2 small, screaming children whilst my church- planting husband has a go for awhile. We have been in London UK for 2 years now and luxuries like books for myself are often forgone because living here is so expensive. I'd love to read the entire thing, if for nothing else an excuse to leave my house by myself again! Thanks for your candid honesty and courage to write how we all feel!

Christine said...

so glad you've found us :)

Hi! I am a pastor's wife and recently bought a copy your book, sight unseen in order to encourage a young lady who grew up in our church and is now a church planter's wife. She's thousands of miles away from home and hearth with 4 young children and in a difficult field of service. I have prayed for her to be blessed by this book! I have other young church planter's wives to whom I wish to gift also, so a free copy would be helpful! I so wish that when i was a young pastor's wife that someone had come alongside me and at least attempted to encourage me in this way. Thank you for sharing your heart and giving encouragement where it is much needed. Blessings to you and yours!

Hey! I recently stumbled on your blog and have been very encouraged by what I've read. I've looked at the excerpts from your book and already have it on my book list for this spring/summer. My husband has been a youth pastor for 8 years. We've enjoyed the ride, but feel like God may be preparing us for something different in the future. We aren't really sure what yet, but want to be completely open to the Lord's will. I think your book would be helpful as we consider God's direction. Thanks for your ministry here on the web! I'd love to win the book, but I'll buy it soon enough even if I don't! Thanks!

I read your article on The Gospel Coalition Blog (25 Things I've Learned from Church Planting) and I was so encouraged. I am a church planting wife. We are only two years into this journey and they have been the most difficult and the most rewarding of my entire life. As I read your article and then went to your website and read some of your posts, I felt for the first time in a very long time that I am not alone. You put into words the things that I think and feel so often, but cannot express. God has used you to bless and encourage me in so many ways! Thank you! I look forward to reading your book soon.

Christine said...

Already bought the book and I'm currently working through it- What a blessing it is to hear your heart, experience and wisdom!!! Sometimes I find that I've already learned some of the lessons but just haven't been able to articulate it... So know as well that you're being used to help my experiences make sense.
I'll be at Exponential with my husband later this month- hopefully I can catch your session!

Christine said...

Thank you for sharing that with me, Amanda. I can't wait to meet you at Exponential!

Christine said...

This makes me so happy! Thank you for such kind words.

Christine said...

Christine, my name is Crista and I will be at Exponential and would love to meet up with you if I can. I am a young wife of a youth pastor in Southeast Los Angeles. My husband feels that the Lord has called him to plant a church. I am currently wrestling with the Lord through some things in my heart and looking for that same calling that he is so confident about. I am praying that Exponential will be an avenue that He uses to confirm some things for us. Your book has been a HUGE help and blessing to me during this time - every chapter God is digging to some deep places of my heart and showing me hidden pride and selfish desires. Your book was released at the perfect time for me. Hopefully it will work out for us to meet!

Christine said...

Awesome, Crista! I can't wait to meet you. I think the way I'll communicate a meetup is through Twitter or on the blog's FB page, which you can follow at the top left of my blog under the "Subscribe to the blog" buttons.

HI Christine!
Your blog has been a light to me as a church planter's wife. It has been a great source of encouragement to me as I walk along side my husband in this path. Thanks for this great book, I would love to read it and glean more! Thanks for the opprotunity to win!

Christine said...

I'd love to read this because I think or would be helpful for anyone planting a church!

Christine said...

Hi Christine,
I just today found your blog through Desiring God. I feel as though my thoughts are being read. I would love to "win" your book as my Husband and I have just started pastoring in the past 8 months. A huge shift as you know. I am very grateful the Lord directed me to your blog today, Thank you!

Christine said...

Hi Christine :)

I'm sure there are a TON of awesome ladies who want to read your book and could definitely benefit from the wisdom found within its pages. I have also enjoyed reading your blog and would love to read the book also at some point (maybe sooner than expected if I win the contest! hehe) I am not actually a church-planting wife.. yet. But my fiancé has been doing full-time missionary work in Peru for the past year, and he got offered a pastoral position at a church plant campus down there, which is pending due to some financial matters within the main church. There have been many talks of the possibility of having a destination wedding and moving myself down there to join him in his efforts. The thought sounds very exciting to me, but I would need a LOT of grace and guidance to step into a role like that. It's a bit of a different circumstance than a typical church plant, but I definitely want to learn and prepare as much as possible! :)

Thanks for all you do!

Christine said...

Hello Christine, so glad to have found your blog. Thank you for writing from the perspective of a church planter's wife - could not be a better time to read your book as now. We are 6 months into planting a church in our area and this transition in our lives has been a rollercoster ride of high expectations, excitement, emotional upheaval, and lonely moments. Look forward to reading your book whether I win or purchase it! Bless you.

Would love to get a copy of your book...whether one or bought! As a church planter's wife, I have so enjoyed your encouraging, honest & helpful words here on your blog. Cannot wait to read the book! I recently read your book, and the Lord has used it greatly in my life. I was both encouraged and convicted, as a church planter's wife. I know couple who will soon begin church planting, and I think this would be an excellent resource for the wife.

I was just introduced to you today through an article emailed by a friend that was published in Desiring God. From there I stumbled upon this blog and now your book! I feel on the verge of tears because there is something about who you are and what you write that connects deeply with me. I am a pastors wife and young mom trying to navigate these waters. I can't wait to read more. I feel encouraged already.

My husband graduates from seminary in May and then we are moving for him to do a 2 year training with a pastor in an already established church. Part of the training will be working to plant a church that my husband will Lord willing, pastor. I'd love to get some wisdom from your book to help prevent me from making mistakes that aren't necessary.:)

Christine said...

For reasons I cannot understand your words resonate with me deeply. Perhaps it's because I find myself ardently trying to live out my calling to ministry with authenticity and faithfulness. In the midst of doing so I wrestle with the realities of stepping out and the loneliness that one frequently encounters when we're pouring into others and find our reservoirs running on empty. Nevertheless, it is my hope that the seeds and words of wisdom graciously dispensed in your book will enrich and bless its readers. Thank you for your transparency and generosity.

Virginia, I'm announcing this tomorrow on the blog but you won the giveaway! Please email me (christinehoover98@gmail.com) with your address and I'll send you a copy of my book. Congratulations!
